Doris Abbott Hancock

Doris Abbott Hancock was born July 28, 1919 to Frederick Roy and Lora Roberts Abbott in Idabel, OK.  She grew up in Idabel and attended college at Southeastern Oklahoma State and Oklahoma State University.  She had the unique opportunity to work in the Pentagon during World War II.  She had the highest security clearance given any civilian and worked in the General Accounting Office receiving coded messages from the battlefields requesting supplies.  After the war Doris moved to Dallas where she continued working for the local General Accounting Office for another 7 years.

In October of 1949 on Texas – OU weekend this Oklahoma girl met her future husband Thomas Wayne Hancock.  They were married in June of 1950 and lived the remainder of their lives in Dallas.  Doris’ primary job was raising their daughters but she also used her business experience to help manage Wayne’s second law office and to do volunteer work.

She enjoyed being a member of the Dallas Petroleum Landmen’s Wives Club, the Hockaday Mother’s Club and the Alpha Delta Pi Mother’s Club for many years as well as the Petroleum Wives Club and 4th Wednesday Club in later years.  She and Wayne were members of Highland Park United Methodist Church for over 50 years.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her sister and brother-in-law Bill and Margaret Abbott Wheeler, her husband Wayne Hancock and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Les and Edna Hancock.  She is survived by her daughters Jan Wooldridge (Tom), Jean Eye (Bob) and their sons Collin Eye (Michelle) and Riley Eye, and step-granddaughter Melissa James (Rick) as well as several nieces and nephews.

Interment will be at DFW National Cemetery on July 21st followed by a memorial service at 1:00 p.m. at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, 12411 Templeton Trail Farmers Branch, Texas 75234.

The family is very grateful for the compassionate care provided by Dr. Mark Casanova of Baylor University Medical Center as well as the assistance given to Doris during the past year by Home Instead.  In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Baylor Health Care Foundation in support of Palliative Care 3600 Gaston Avenue, Dallas 75246 or the charity of your choice.
