Lewis Alvis Alderman, age 87, passed away August 14, 2026, at his family farm North of Commerce. A visitation will take place on Wednesday, August 19, 2026 from 10:00 A.M. to noon at the Fairlie Home Place in Fairlie, Texas. The funeral service will begin at noon, followed by a private committal service at Rosemound Cemetery. The family will provide lunch at the Fairlie Home Place following the committal service. Everyone is invited.
Alvis was born on April 26, 1939, in Corsicana, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray Thomas Alderman and Lorene Slaughter Alderman, his sister Nelda Alderman Carter, his brother-in-law George Carter, and his nephew Greg Carter.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marcia Jetton Alderman; his son Charles Alderman and wife Sarah, along with their children Colton and Tessa; and his son James Alderman, all of Commerce. He is also survived by his nephew Thomas Carter and wife Debbie of San Antonio; relatives Courtney Carter Singleton and husband Clayton, and Andrea Carter Scofield and husband Sam; as well as several special cousins, Darlene Caddel, Sandra Karnes, Sharon Egonis, and Linda Beeman.
Since beginning his teaching career in 1972, Alvis touched the lives of countless students across Texas, serving in Cleveland, Pecos, Chapel Hill, Center, Honey Grove, and Commerce. In Commerce, he served as the assistant principal at Commerce High School for 22 years.
Alvis had a true love for ranching. Whether it was his horses, cattle or the rodeo, he spent his entire life as a man who loved his animals and the land.
