Blake Wesley Cooper was born April 9, 1960 in Freeport, Texas to Harden and Betty Jeanne (Jones) Cooper as the youngest of four children. He graduated from Alief Hastings High School in Houston before attending East Texas State University, where he played football for 4 years and met the love of his life, Tammy Spiva. Blake and Tammy married during college and have shared all things in life together with their children and grandchildren. A funeral service will take place Monday, December 22, 2025 beginning at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church Sulphur Springs, TX. The family invites you to a lunch immediately following the service where there will be an opportunity to visit with the family and share memories.
Upon graduating from E.T. with his Bachelors in Broadfield Social Science, Blake continued his education, earning his Masters degree while working as a graduate assistant for the football team. He enjoyed many teaching and coaching positions; C.E. King High School, back to East Texas State, Sulphur Springs High School, South Garland High School, Winnsboro High School and Edgewood High School. His time in the classroom and on the field coaching was his ultimate passion and allowed him to impact the lives of many young students and athletes. In the spring of 2002, Blake transitioned from the classroom into administration full time. His years of administration included Principal of Edgewood High School, Assistant Superintendent at Kaufman ISD, and finally 8 years as Superintendent of Commerce ISD.
With his passion deeply rooted in the education of young people, his secondary careers didn’t stray far. These included Executive Director of Friends of Texas Public Schools, officiating with USA Track & Field, Texas Education Consultant for Coryell Roofing, and Impact Education Specialists. He also founded a non-profit organization, Educators Christian Fellowship, where he sent out daily devotionals to educators to help encourage them in their daily battle to ‘stomp out ignorance’. Blake and Tammy also made the annual trip to the Texas UIL State Track meet, where Blake worked the meet for over 20 years. All of these relationships allowed him the opportunity to be continuously involved and engaged with schools and communities across the State of Texas and beyond.
Away from the world of education, Blake’s faith in Jesus and conviction about community led him to always keep his family plugged into church. He served on numerous committees in those churches throughout the years. Some of Blake and Tammy’s biggest joys included leading the college ministry at FBC Commerce, as well as attending several mission trips, including Mexico, Alaska and Minnesota.
Maybe Blake’s proudest accomplishments in life were his three children and getting to be a Pawpaw to his grandchildren. He was always bragging of their accomplishments and was ready to pull out the pictures at the drop of a hat. He loved getting to attend their events and activities and spoiling them with smores and hay rides. He was the absolute best Pawpaw any kid could ask for.
Remaining behind temporarily to cherish Blake’s memory are Tammy, Wesley and Kelsey Cooper of Sulphur Springs with their children Clark & Caroline, Robert and Emily Cooper of Weatherford with Luke, Josh & Hannah, and Matt and Rebekah Rich of Winnsboro, with Isabelle, Adrianna, Vanessa & Naomi. He is also survived by his siblings, Melinda McGee of Katy, Mike & Monte Cooper of Plano, Craig & Dianne Cooper of Mineola, and in-laws Tim & Holly Spiva of Vega and Monica & Glen Calvert of Mt. Pleasant, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of wonderful friends!
Blake was preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law Henry Spiva and his brother-in-law Louis McGee.
