Bobby Joe Massey passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 5, 2025, at the New Jersey Veterans Home in Paramus, NJ, after a three-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born on February 14, 1950, to Mary Frances Marriott Massey and John Edwin Massey in Commerce, Texas, Bobby was part of a close-knit family whose roots run deep in the community.
Bobby enlisted in the Army in 1971 and served in the Vietnam War, earning honors for his service. His military career took him to many parts of the United States, as well as Vietnam, Germany, and Korea, where he spent many years with his wife Chom, whom he married while stationed in Korea in 1985. No matter where life took him, Bobby always considered himself a Texan at heart.
He retired in 2000 as a Command Sergeant Major after a long and distinguished career, during which he was awarded the prestigious Legion of Merit. After retiring from the military, he continued to work as a government contractor, helping young noncommissioned officers fulfill their dreams of earning a college degree and higher education, just as he had done.
Bobby is survived by his wife, Chom Massey (Seoul, South Korea); his daughter Christine Croft and her husband Bill Croft (Whitehouse Station, New Jersey); his son James Massey-Kim and his wife Cynthia Massey-Kim (Danville, California); his four grandchildren, Alex Croft, Katie Croft, Elijiah Massey-Kim and Ellie Massey-Kim, and his brothers Martey Massey (Commerce, Texas) and Len Massey (Commerce, Texas).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and John Massey, and his brother Michael Ray Massey.
Though a very reserved person, Bobby’s life was marked by his love for family - especially his wife Chom, his playful character, his love for the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Astros, and a passion for classic rock music, particularly Bob Dylan. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A visitation will be held at Commerce Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 14, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m, with a funeral service immediately following beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment, with military honors, will take place at Stewart Cemetery, 3750 FM 1568, Campbell, TX.
