Janet Ann Bridges

June 7, 1942 — May 8, 2025

Dr. Janet Ann Bridges, beloved daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 82 after a courageous battle with Covid and Alzheimer’s disease. Born June 7, 1942, in Manhattan, New York, she was the daughter of Paul and Frances (Gibson) Schulz. Janet grew up in New York City, Ohio, and Memphis, Tennessee.

Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, May 15, 2025 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Commerce Funeral Home. A funeral service will immediately follow beginning at 3:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Rosemound Cemetery in Commerce.

Janet graduated High School and then attended Memphis State University where she met her future husband Lamar Bridges. Janet and Lamar were married in November 1963 and they eventually moved to Mt. Pleasant, Michigan to raise their family. In 1983, Janet and Lamar relocated to Commerce, Texas and have been a part of the community ever since.

While in Michigan, she began working on her doctorate, obtaining her PhD in Mass Media from Michigan State University in 1988. She then spent almost 30 years as a professor in Louisiana and Texas, eventually retiring from Sam Houston University. She had several published works and served as a Department Chairperson prior to her retirement.

Janet and Lamar loved to travel and spent many summers traveling the world to places like the Great Wall of China, Prague, Italy, Alaska, and Europe. In the summers they could be found touring somewhere in the world to experience a new adventure.

Janet always enjoyed going to see Off-Broadway productions in Dallas with Lamar, where they were long time season ticket holders. Janet also had a great love for music, was an avid pianist, and loved animals, especially dogs.

Janet was predeceased by her parents Paul and Frances Schulz, and many other beloved family members. Janet’s memory will forever be cherished by her husband, Lamar, sons Jeffrey (Rosemarie) of New York and Kevin (Lynette) of Arizona and cherished grandchildren Grant, Lauryn, Daniel, and Reese.
