Mary Cravens Casey of Commerce passed away Saturday, June 15, 2013 in McKinney, Texas following an illness.
Mary was born on June 20, 1928 to Brooksey and Charley Cravens in the Mount Zion community. She attended school at Branom and graduated from Commerce High School. In 1950 she graduated from East Texas State Teachers College (Texas A&M University Commerce) with a Bachelors degree and later a Masters. She married Leland Casey on January 25, 1946 and they had one daughter, Judy Hadaway.
Mary, Leland and Judy moved to Pecos, Texas in 1951 and spent the next 30 years with the Pecos Independent School District. They remained in Pecos until they retired in 1984 and they moved back to the East Texas area settling in Commerce. They were both very active in the community and delighted in being back where they both grew up and where they could enjoy their extended family and friends.
Mary was currently a member of First United Methodist Church, the Dough Rollins Sunday School class, Northeast Hunt County Retired Teacher Association, United Methodist Women, Webb Hill Country Club, and several bridge clubs. She spent many years volunteering at the church, most notably as a helper in the office, setting up sanctuary flowers for holidays, decorating for special events and was well known for organizing the funeral meals for the church.
She was preceded in death by her parents and Leland, her husband of 60 years, her sister Georgia Davis and brother Dewitt Cravens. She is survived by her daughter, Judy and husband Jerry Hadaway of Prosper, Texas, grandchildren, Michael Foulds and wife, Teri of Midland, Texas, and Casey Foulds of Denton, Texas, great grandchildren, Sutton, Sawyer and Sloan Foulds all of Midland, Texas. She is also survived by her dear sister, Nita Herman of Cumby, Texas, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 1:30 pm at the First Baptist Church Commerce, officiated by Reverend Valerie Englert. Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Cumby, Texas. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:00 on Tuesday at the Commerce Funeral Home. Pallbearers for the service will be Sutton Foulds, Sawyer Foulds, Benny Herman, Roger Herman, Don Stringer, Jim Ainsworth, and Mickey Cravens.
Memorials may be directed to the Mary and Leland Casey Scholarship fund c/o First United Methodist Church Foundation of Commerce, Texas, the Mount Zion Cemetery Association, Cumby, Texas or a charity of choice.
