Ernest Tom Smith

Ernest Thomas Smith, 75, of Commerce, passed away on Monday, October 15, 2018.  He was born on July 17, 1943 in Dallas, Texas, the son of James Thomas Smith and Carrie Oleta Wilkinson.  A visitation will take place on Saturday, October 20, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Commerce Funeral Home in Commerce. The funeral will follow at 12:00 p.m. at the funeral home with RJ Nanny officiating.  Interment will take place at Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Tom attended Dallas schools after which he enlisted in the United States Navy.  Following his service, he worked in retail management.  He was self employed in the home improvement industry for many years.  Tom married the love of his life, Joy Poteet, in Sunnyvale, Texas on June 1, 1975. Tom’s favorite way to spend his leisure time was fishing.  He also received great pleasure from spending time with his family at the lake. 

Tom is survived by his wife of 43 years, Joy; his children, Sherri Woodworth and husband, John, Suzzi Yarbrough and Rodney Smith and wife, Sara; grandchildren, Trevor Smith, Summer Smith, Nikki Peterson, Erika Hensley and husband, Brandon and a miracle baby on the way; great grandchildren, Gabriel Fuller, Harper Fuller and Debbie Peterson; a brother, Carl Smith and wife, Vicki and sisters, Genie Mikesell and Nellie Belmote and many nieces and nephews.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, James and Carrie Smith; his sister, Leta Hunter; a nephew, Darrell Johnston and a niece, Linda Denton.

Serving as pallbearers for Tom are Brandon Hensley, Mark Bush, John Woodworth, Carl Smith, Gaylon Steele and Garon Burgin.

Serving as an honorary pallbearer is Gabriel Fuller.
