Roger Compton Obituary

Roger Dale Compton, of Commerce, went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 24, 2020 in Sherman, Texas.  He was born on March 13, 1943 in Celeste, Texas, the son of Emmitt Ray Compton and Mavis Modene Cruse Compton.  A graveside service will take place to honor Roger on Thursday, July 30, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. Hogeye Cemetery in Celeste, Texas.

Roger attended high school in Celeste, Texas.  During high school he was quite an accomplished athlete, taking part in several sports. On September 1, 1961, Roger married Joyce Maxine Statzer in Celeste, Texas.  Roger had many varied interests that filled his time.  He was known as the best mechanic around, especially working on race cars, which he loved.  He also excelled at slow pitch softball, playing the position of pitcher.  He and Joyce spent time “pinging cans” and target shooting in the middle of a field on many occasions.  When he wasn’t found being active in one of these outdoor activities, Roger was also an avid reader.  He especially loved the author Louis L’Amour, having read all of L’Amour’s novels.  Roger proudly owned the complete set!

Roger is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Joyce; his children, Wende Lea D’Andrea, Jeffrey Shane Compton, James Scott Compton and wife, Kathy and Dan Allan Compton; grandchildren, Shallon Hobby and husband, Shawn, Vince D’Andrea and wife, Nicole, Dane Compton, Seth Compton and Kiley Compton; sister, Joyce Marie Barnett and husband, Bill; brother, Michael Compton along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emmitt and Mavis Compton.
