Scotty Chastain Obituary

Scottie (Scotty) Milton Chastain passed away at the age of 79 in Commerce, TX, on March 2, 2024, and was met by his loving parents, “Speedy” and “PeeWee”.

Scotty was born to Homer Milton Chastain and Bana Mae Early Chastain on October 17, 1944, in San Angelo, TX.  He grew up in a neighborhood where there were playmates by the dozen.  Danny Byrd lived just down Bell Street, Larry Loudamy was around the corner on East Harris Avenue, and Scotty Watts lived next door to the Chastains.  Summer baseball was their passion.

“Speedy” had been an umpire in his younger years, so his son was “gonna play ball!”  He owned a transfer and storage company and kept Scotty occupied on weekends and in the summertime.  However, when Scotty was on the mound, his dad parked his truck on the other side of the centerfield fence and honked loudly and proudly.

“PeeWee” worked at a high-end clothes store in the Village Shopping Center in San Angelo.  She was an organizer and a stickler for order at work and at home.  We all knew to use the door to her kitchen via the garage to enter her house.  The front door was only used when someone who didn’t know the rules was trying to sell something.  The “living room” area and every other room was spotless.  She was a fabulous cook and used her pressure cooker religiously.  We all respected and sometimes feared that tiny little person.

Playing baseball was like breathing for Scotty.  He was a pitcher for San Angelo Central High School and again for San Angelo College (now San Angelo State University).  He had hoped to be drafted by a professional team, but it was not to be.  Instead, he used his “backup” math skills and sought a teaching position at the high school in Robert Lee, TX.  He was hired as a high school math teacher and as a coach for the high school’s girls track team.  After a few years, he returned to San Angelo and was hired by Air Motors in the sales department.

Missing having his sons around, Scotty retired and moved to Commerce, TX to live with his son, Larry (named after one of Scotty’s dear friends, Larry Loudamy).  After many blessed years with Larry, Scotty’s health began to decline, and he was placed in the Oak Manor Nursing Home in Commerce, where he resided at the time of his passing.

Scotty is survived by his two sons, Larry Milton Chastain of Commerce, TX and Michael Wade Chastain of Wylie, TX.  His grandchildren are Baley Milton Chastain, Upper Marlboro, MD; Labe’ Chastain, Alexia Chastain, and Abraham Chastain of Commerce, TX; Garrett Chastain, Little Elm, TX; and Ryan Chastain, Wylie, TX.

May Scotty find that precious pitching mound again and hear his dad blasting the truck’s horn.
