Obituary
Susan Mathews, a long-time resident of Commerce, passed away peacefully in her home on August 31st with her daughter by her side.
Susan was a kind, creative, articulate, talented woman who loved her children above all else. She was passionate about caring for animals and our planet. She saw beauty in all of God’s creation.
Susan was born to Dave and Leila Merrick in Keokuk, Iowa. Nestled on the banks of the Mississippi River, she lived in Iowa until she was 19, at which time she moved to Texas with her family.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Connie Mathews of Commerce, her son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Sheryre Mathews of Oklahoma, and their four children, Hunter Mathews of Texas, Tyler Mathews of Utah, Kinsey Johnston of Oklahoma, and Trace Mathews, also of Oklahoma. Susan will also be fondly remembered by her brother, David Merrick of Colorado and several cousins in Iowa and Missouri.
